Stop Online Piracy Act – SOPA

SOPAThe  Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), along with the Protect IP Act (PIPA)  are designed to provide the government and copyright holders with powers to block access to “rogue websites dedicated to infringing or counterfeit goods,” especially those registered outside the United States. Originally introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy in May of this year, has been met with huge opposition from Digital Rights activists, online social media companies, bloggers and businesses whose base are web 2.0 properties.

Money is the bottom line here, unfortunately.  In the final analysis, if the SOPA passes, it essentially gives power to whoever lobbies on behalf of the entertainment industry, the power to censor the internet.  The absurdity of this whole situation has left people speechless, no pun intended.

Fight for the Future published a 3-minute infographic video explaining the basics of the bills and their impact on everyday activities of online interactions. Seriously, watch this. It’s very well put together and outlines what we’re in for if these ridiculous bills are passed.

Web Hosting Provider Hostgator is one of the larger web hosting companies who opposes these ridiculous acts and in protest has offered their web hosting at deals of up to 50% off. They are in the top ten largest web hosting providers in the world. If you need web hosting you should probably consider this. It doesn’t get much cheaper than this from such a quality company.
